I like to solve puzzles without any automated tips or advice. However I have found SudokuDragon very useful for just typing in a puzzle and then printing it out in a good easy to read and annotate size.

The program gives you print options that let you list all the annotations that you have made to squares. This is useful if you've partly solved a puzzle and the paper has just got too messy due to a few backtracking moves.

The print size is large and clear and you can change the colors used if you like.

Yes the print feature is useful.

If you don't like the chequerboard background for squares you can always customize this using the Options in the View menu. Select Appearance and set the color for the chequer box square unallocated 1 and unallocated 2 both to be white.

I normally print out all puzzles and find the chequered effect distracting.

Printing now easier (re: Solving Printed Puzzles) contributed by SudokuDragon
With release 2.7 of SudokuDragon you don't need to have the same grid display on the screen as printed out. That's because there are now display themes that can be selected for the screen or for the printer or both.

The software comes with two black and white display themes designed for use with monochrome printers (or just take save on colour ink).

Use the Print Options from the File menu to select the print theme for the grid

If you want the Sudoku puzzle printed in a different size then you can do this by saving the puzzle image as a file (Using the Game | Save As Image) or right click menu (Save as Image).

This generates a .png graphics file of just the grid puzzle area and you can then print this from

the Explorer using File | Print or any of the popular graphics packages.

This lets me produce a much larger version that I like to use than that which Sudoku Dragon normally produces.
