The Shared Subgroup rule is the first technique to turn to when you have tried Only Choice; Only Square and Single Possibility rules with no luck. It is a different kind of rule because instead of telling you were a number must go it tells you where it can not go. This is often useful because that in turn can knock out the only other possibility for a square.
